2D is still a very popular genre as they are a very easy game to play as there is normally only one way to go and it is normally forwards, they are simple games that every age can play without getting confused and have lots of fun with it, the gameplay seems a little bit more fair in the ways you die as it is normally your own fault as you can see more around you. the games are easier to make and can be really fun for a simple game.
But there are disadvantages for example bottomless pits are hard to notice in 2D, The screen can get cluttered really fast and then get confusing to everyone, 2D games have a more limited genre and its not realistic so it might throw some games off because of that aspect. 3D is the more popular genre to the more hardcore players, The advantages of this genre are more realistic in many ways with like graphics, driving, shooting and so on. It has the capability to have more genres connected to it for example fps, tps, racing, rpg, platforming and many more. The background can be the "world" around them that is interactive which mean there is much more to explore. 3D has better graphics that will hook most gamers on the "realistic look". The games are normal longer and has higher quality in them than 2D The disadvantages of 3D games is: games take longer with bigger teams witch costs more, controls are more complicated witch needs tutorials but arnt really offered any more just a picture of a controller pointing at buttons with what they do. 3D games can be a hit and miss with crappy controls and shitting camera work that wont move for you. there is so much more disadvantages that i haven't covered but you get the picture. here's a link if you want to keep reading about it :) http://www.screwattack.com/news/2d-vs-3d-which-better
